Steve Jones
Candidate for the upcoming General Election on November 3, 2026. Always verify official ballot status with the Maryland State Board of Elections.
Steven R. 'Steve' Jones is a 59-year-old Solomons resident, retired law enforcement commander, and independent unaffiliated candidate running for Calvert County Commissioner At-Large in 2026. A 32-year veteran of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office who retired at the rank of Major as Homeland Security Commander, Jones is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has extensive county governance experience, having served as a member and two-year Chairman of the Calvert County Planning Commission, member of the Board of License Commissioners (appointed by Gov. Hogan), the Employee Retirement Board, and as a volunteer firefighter. Running unaffiliated to put 'people before party,' Jones is focused on accountable, accessible government where every citizen has a seat at the table, responsible budgeting that 'cuts the fat' from non-essentials, uncompromising support for public safety, and smart growth that strictly follows the county's comprehensive plan while preserving rural character and property rights.

Strict Adherence to Comprehensive Plan & Infrastructure Capacity
Drawing on his tenure as Planning Commission Chairman, insists all development strictly follow the county comprehensive plan, directing growth only where roads, water, sewer, and emergency services are adequate before approvals.
"Ensure development follows the county’s comprehensive plan and respects the character of surrounding neighborhoods. Require careful planning for roads, schools, public safety, water, sewer, and emergency services before approving major development."
Uncompromising Support for First Responders & Community Safety
Leveraging 32 years with the Calvert Sheriff's Office and Homeland Security command, prioritizes equipping law enforcement, volunteer firefighters, and EMS with the resources and modern communication needed to protect residents.
"I served Calvert County for 32 years as an officer... I will provide strong support for public safety and make sure our law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical services have the resources needed to protect our communities."
Cutting the Fat in Non-Essentials & Protecting Taxpayer Dollars
Pledges rigorous examination of county spending to cut the fat from non-essential services, requiring thorough cost-benefit reviews and citizen input before any funding requests are approved.
"Go through the budget and cut the fat. Take a look at non-essential services. When anyone asks for money, research it and get input from the citizens to assure the money is to be well spent."
People Before Party: An Accessible Seat at the Table for All Residents
Runs as an independent unaffiliated candidate answering directly to citizens rather than party establishments, promising accessible town hall meetings and full transparency on major decisions.
"I am an advocate for independent leadership that puts people before party. As a commissioner, citizens will find me approachable. They can talk to me and, metaphorically, have a seat at the table."
