How Candidate & Election Data Is Gathered
To guarantee strict neutrality and verifiable accuracy, Open Elections Maryland avoids subjective editorializing. Our pipeline relies on automated indexing of direct primary sources:
Primary Source Ingestion
Crawls certified local media RSS feeds (The BayNet, SoMD Chronicle, SMNewsNet, Maryland Matters) and official candidate platforms.
Entity Matching
Accurately resolves candidate mentions, ballot offices, and district codes using deterministic natural language entity matching.
Policy Topic Tagging
Categorizes articles and announcements by civic topic (Infrastructure, Education, Economy, Public Safety, Taxes, Environment).
Direct Voter Access
Publishes updates directly to the comparison matrices and candidate timelines with verbatim excerpts and direct source hyperlinks.
Registered Media & Candidate Sources

Public audit trail of news articles and campaign statements indexed by the pipeline
To protect our voter guide from automated spam, rate-limiting, and unauthorized tampering, write access to the ingestion pipeline is decoupled from public web requests. Pipeline updates execute via automated GitHub Actions cron runners, and changes are permanently logged to Git audit history.
Repository administrators can trigger on-demand syncs via the GitHub repository's Actions → Scheduled Candidate Updates Sync → Run workflow dispatch trigger.
